Moving a 20-tonne satellite
Nasmyth Technologies is an expert in complex structures and welding, precision machining and electro-mechanical systems, providing solutions to the £35-billion UK aerospace industry.
Airbus Space and Defence had tasked the company to create a solution to mobilise their newly-built 20-tonne satellite. The satellite moved from one site to another during its construction, in and out of multiple factories and cleanroom environments. While Nasmyth had designed and manufactured a bespoke trolley to support the satellite and its container, they required a device to pull the trolley safely – and at circa 25,000kgs total weight, this was no mean feat!
Our team provided the client with 3 x V-Move 4XL movers from Verhagen Leiden. A bespoke arrangement, we fit each unit with a customised coupling, non-marking tires, and an option for complete remote control. Each unit also had 1,200kg of counterweights fitted, which required a dedicated forklift truck transporter to move them to the client’s site. Capable of pushing or pulling loads of up to 40,000kgs, the units each have scope to move the satellite, its container and trolley from place to place with ease.
Nasmyth Technologies initially contacted us based on our ability to deal with large loads, and they were not disappointed. The solution has met the need, helping our client and Airbus Space and Defence achieve their objective and move the satellite safely. The client has since worked with us on several projects, completely satisfied with the service level and offering.
